Stayed for 6 nights in mid-January. We previously stayed at the Excellence El Carmen in Dominican Republic and loved that one! This stay at Playa Mujeres was for my daughter's wedding, at the resort, right on the beach, which was absolutely lovely. It was thoughtfully planned, the food was great, mariachi band was Wonderful, as was the DJ afterward. Easily the BEST night of the trip. But, of course we loved our entire stay and even stayed an extra night as we didn't want to leave!
The staff were all amazing, friendly, competent, and funny! The shows in the theater each night were also amazing, as was Mexican Fiesta night, and the show on Mexican history.
Shoutout to a few staff members who made our time at the pool and restaurants/bars even more enjoyable: Cesar ("give it away, give it away, give it away man") at the martini bar, as well as Juan and Kevin; Roman and Eduardo at the swim-up bar (shots, shots, and more shots); Gustavo, our faithful server at the side pool, and Johnny in The Kitchen for breakfast. Many more whose names we forgot ;-) but they were all Amazing! The cleaning staff for our room was top-notch (7021), thank you!
We want to try the new one (Coral) up the beach next! Highly recommend the Excellence brand resorts!

Sully the Picasso gave us a great experience on our last day with lovely coy fish sand art!
Hope she’s still around when we come back next year.
My favorite bartender Jair made us best drinks we’ve had in our lives! Really wish he was around in the evening too! Hope we can run into him again when we visit late this year or next year.
Our Valentine dinner at the French restaurant was good expect the lady hall manager showed an attitude when I asked to sit beside a window seat. We were the first people to be seated tgat day.
Jair, Andres, Edgar, Kevin, Jose, and Sully thank you for making our experience great and memorable!

We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres for 5 nights. The service from the moment we landed on the property was excellent. Everyone from the front desk to guest services to room service and wait staff did their job with a smile and were extremely prompt and courteous. They had coordinated with our transfer company to ensure a smooth drop-off and pickup from the airport. Our Junior suite was clean and well equipped and we enjoyed the balcony thoroughly. The food was for the most part average to slightly above average, we felt it was consistently under seasoned likely to appeal to a more universal palette. We felt the Lobster House and the buffet were our favorites amongst the restaurants. The hotel was also extremely helpful in guiding our excursions during this trip and made every excursion very smooth.
Our only major complaint was the fact that it took significant time for the food to come out at sit down restaurants: 45 min-1hr almost every time. This meant we had to show up at the restaurant quite a bit ahead of when we wanted to eat which took some getting used to.
We also got a massage at the spa which was excellent and enjoyed sitting on the pristine beach. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the service and experience here and would definitely come back.

Excellence Playa Mujeres ended up being an amazing trip — but it truly depends on your room category.
When we first arrived, we did not upgrade. Our initial room was poolside and closer to the main square where they host concerts and nightly shows. Unfortunately, the guests next to us were having a bachelorette party and blasting music, and we could hear everything at night when trying to sleep. It definitely did not feel relaxing. We also went to the main buffet area for breakfast (which was fine, but nothing exceptional) and had dinner at the Mexican restaurant, which was honestly disappointing considering we were in Mexico.
After the first day, we asked the front desk about moving rooms and decided to upgrade to the Excellence Club — and this was hands down the best decision we made.
Once we upgraded, the entire experience changed. Our room was in a quieter building with its own private pool area. They did turn down service. They also had an excellent selection of pillows from you to choose from to elevate your sleep experience. The Excellence Club restaurants were significantly better, and the Excellence Club breakfast was fantastic — fresh juices, better service, and a much more elevated experience overall.
You still have to go early to claim beach chairs (that part doesn’t change), but the Excellence Club beach area was quieter, the chairs and beds were more comfortable, and it truly felt relaxing.
If you are looking for a peaceful, elevated experience, I would absolutely recommend booking Excellence Club from the start. Once we upgraded, our stay became exactly what we were hoping for — calm, luxurious, and enjoyable.
Also, the location of the beach on the coast was amazing. Very minimal seaweed and amazing to swim in!

This Excellence is smaller than the ones at Riviera Maya and Punta Cana. Service is overall excellent, but they have shrunk the menus and eliminated several of our old favorite food options.
There are never enough floats in the main pool, and they prohibit you from using your own. Additionally, the "lazy river" in February was probably below 70 degrees, which is colder than most people want to swim in.
The singular smoking section is a very small area with 4 chairs. That's right: four (4) chairs for a resort that has many hundreds of guests.
The sand was very soft and fine, and the water was very clear. Service both at the beach and the pool is excellent. Staff is very friendly.
Overall a good place, but next time I think we're going back to Punta Cana.
