Where should I even begin? We arrived early to drop off our bags and walk around before check-in. The reception staff were very kind and handled our luggage perfectly; the lobby is beautiful. We checked in after 3 PM, and the process was quick, attentive, and friendly.
Our room was mid-sized, featuring a sofa and a balcony with a slight view of the sea. At first glance, we liked it. However, we later realized that there was no signal and the Wi-Fi was very poor in the room, making it nearly impossible to use our phones. That was the smaller issue; the bigger problem was a strange, stale smell that kept coming back. It was honestly quite smelly in the room, so we had to keep the ventilation fan running all night. Also, there was a huge gap under the door, and the windows seemed to let in the cold.
The hotel has a sauna, which I think is a bit small for the number of guests, but otherwise, we were satisfied with it. The single indoor pool is also a bit limited, but it's okay since there are two more pools on the roof for the summer. We couldn't use those now as it was still too cold. The staff at the rooftop bar are lovely, and the cocktails are good. However, at the 'Prickly Pear' bar downstairs, we tried to have a drink one evening, but no one came to serve us; they simply ignored us.
The buffet breakfast and dinner were very delicious and plentiful. While the breakfast stayed the same for three days, the dinner menu changed and followed different themes. We were genuinely satisfied with the food. Sandi, one of the staff members, was always so kind and attentive. Overall, because of the issues mentioned, I'm giving it 4 stars.

The staff on reception are wonderful, helpful, polite and professional. The spa was lovely, we had a couples massage which was very relaxing. The main dining room had a themed buffet each night which is very good value. The buffet breakfast has lots of choice. The Prickly Pear is good for a snack and a drink but chilly if you go out of season as the auto door is constantly in use. The hotel is situated two thirds of the way up a steep hill. There is a good bus service but we used ubers as better price than taxis and saved waiting around for buses.

The hotel was always clean and tidy, all staff are helpful and greet you with a smile. The rooms are a good size and the beds are very comfortable. Food was great at the prickly pear, and the staff at the prickly pear were friendly and kind. The cleaners was always accomadating and did a fine job after cleaning the room. The only down side was no infinty pool as mentioned on the website, but this did not hinder our holiday. Perfect Hotel with a great bunch of staff.

The Solana Hotel in Mellieħa has some lovely features. The rooftop terrace and pool are definitely the highlight — spacious, stylish, and offering beautiful views over the town and the sea. The indoor pool and gym are also a nice addition, and the staff we met were generally friendly and polite.
Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didn’t live up to expectations. We stayed five nights in a deluxe suite with a partial sea view, but the room layout was awkward and the furniture felt misplaced. The balcony was large and pleasant, yet when seated you only saw a wall — the sea view was visible only when standing, even though we paid extra for it.
Housekeeping was inconsistent: some days were fine, others less so. The bed linen was never changed during our stay, and the bathroom had no ventilation, which made it damp and unpleasant. The eco-friendly shower system was a nice idea, but water pressure was too low to be comfortable.
The free Wi-Fi connection was unreliable — slow and constantly disconnecting, not what one would expect from a modern four-star hotel.
We tried the buffet dinner once, but it was disappointing: bland food, little seasoning, and overall a canteen-like atmosphere. Breakfast felt repetitive, focusing on quantity rather than quality.
Overall, the hotel looks great on paper but falls short in practice. For the price paid, it didn’t meet our expectations, and we would not return.

The pros of the hotel was that pool and gym access are included in reservation, however if you want to buy a spa services, for simple massage be ready to pay around 100€ or even more. Even thought the pools are usually always crowded, we had a chance to enjoy heated pool outside, which one was like 3 steps away. The gym is okay too, just would be nice if someone time to time clean the dusts.
Reception ladies and gentlemen are very friendly and informative.
The room itself, I should say it was pretty spacey, we book twin room, so had the beds near by, a lot of space in wardrobe, basic vault, small old refrigerator, kettle (with coffees and teas), tv.
The bathroom I should say is okay too, but if we consider the long time of waiting till not even hot water comes in, is pretty annoying.
The cons would be lukewarm water in shower. Even thought they change the towels and make the beds everyday, swipe the floor would not cost much time. The fact that you have to pay for slippers (which is in most 4stars hotels being given for free) is upsetting, because floors are super freeze.
Mosquitoes - those blood suckers! Is so many of them there.
And the layout of hotel, many elevators with different floors directions is super confusing. Wth.. to reach our room we had to go from 0 (reception) to -3 and than find unclear small elevator from 0 again to -1 because that one does not go there or go to the different-1.
Breakfast in the website was written 12€ euros with possibility to buy at the place but when we came they asked 15€.
And plugs is still UK format…
In general, is a good place to stay, the prices does not hurt your wallet and accessibility to buses and ports is very close.
