Had a lovely weekend here. Food basic but perfectly cooked and plentiful. Kitchen staff fab. Served us even though late for dinner one evening. Salads not on display but are available, which is great, as it is kept crisp and fresh in the kitchen. Our room was yet to be refurbished. There was a small stain and carpet was showing a bit of wear. The bedroom and bathroom were both clean. The entertainment at the hotel was ok. One tip; don't buy half pints at the bar, my friend paid £5.25 for a pint, but they charged £6 for two halves. It's cheaper to book direct than go through Trivago or Booking.com. If you book direct there is no extra charge for parking. Didn't use the swimming pool, but it looked lovely, although a bit on the small side. Would definitely go back.

Had a 3 night stay here in May. The weather really was fabulous. I was offered the £5 per night room upgrade which i took which was a great choice. Food is all buffet style which suits me the best. Great Sports Bar with outside area and outdoor screens. The Showbar is lovely with quizzes, bingo and acts. Hard working and pleasant staff including the lovely Terry the duty manager. Large hotel with alot of steps and corridors.

Our room overlooked the road which was ok, unfortunately it was absolutely boiling there was a fan in the room which sounded like it was about to blow up, went to reception and had it changed immediately which was great and had no problems with that. We went away for out anniversary and had a really good weekend, the breakfast could be improved I think, the sausages looked like they needed cooking longer and the bacon looked the same. Maybe a bit more choice for breakfast wouldn't go a miss such as cold meats etc. The ladies on reception were very nice, professional, happy and very helpful. On Saturday night I asked a member of the bar staff for a bucket with ice as it was our anniversary and had a bottle of champagne that I had given my husband for our anniversary, unfortunately the man who I asked was pretty rude and said no, I said it was to take up to the room and he said that the best he could do was for me to buy a bottle of coke and he could give me a glass of ice, I said is that it and he said yes. So that put a bit of a dampener on our experience in the bar, not happy at all.

I have been to Torquay 3 times, twice I've stayed here and the 3rd time was a different hotel (coach company choices) and The Riviera is miles above the other one. Terry the manager is so friendly and helpful as are the receptionists. The entertainment is miles above every other I've seen, the bingo is not only fantastic but the staff members who do it and the quiz are so entertaining, Terry's jokes and grumbles make it even better. The food is always beautiful, yes I've had rooms that were on top floors that I've had to climb, but that was my own choice when I upgraded.
I would definitely prefer to stay in this hotel than the other one. I even came to this one on the Saturday night as it was better value, entertainment and atmosphere.

Room OK. Good bathroom. Tried to charge extra for an upgraded room.
Steep steps in hotel and lift unreliable.
Buffet was a bun fight. Food not very hot. No labels for those with dietary needs and staff unhelpful.
No bar during the day, expected to use sports bar next door which was noisy and unsuitable. Lots of drunks sat outside.
Located close to sea but a long way from the town. Walk back up a steep hill.
Evening entertainment excellent.
